Mental Health and Substance Use Patient Experience of Care Survey
Improving care for people with mental health and substance use problems is one of the goals identified in B.C.’s 10-year mental health and substance use plan.
We are committed to a patient-centred model of health care, and understanding patients’ needs is a key part of this commitment. This province wide survey, the first of its kind for this sector, was designed to support accountability, quality improvement, and help government and health authorities respond to the health care needs of British Columbians.
From October 12, 2010 to April 11, 2011, the Ministry of Health, through participation of all six health authorities, surveyed mental health patients and substance use clients over the age of 13 who received short stay inpatient care and services at 102 service locations across British Columbia.

Results for PHSA
The PHSA report highlights results for youth, 13-17 years-old, in mental health short-stay inpatient care. Within BC Mental Health & Substance Use Services, the Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatry, Eating Disorders Inpatient Unit, Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Emergency are included in the PHSA report.
PHSA-specific survey results are impressive; 88% of inpatient short stay youth mental health patients rated their overall quality of care as good, very good or excellent.
Patients also gave top scores in key areas of feeling safe in the facility, feeling respected (not feeling stigmatized), and having their spiritual needs met.
