Riverview Redevelopment Project
A new model of specialized psychiatric care
As of July 2012 the remaining Riverview Hospital patients were transferred to the regional health authorities and the hospital was closed.
The Riverview Redevelopment Project was initiated in 2002 as part of a provincial mental health plan. The goal was to build capacity for specialized mental health services within the health regions. Health authorities developed replacement beds and then patients and bed-funding were transferred from Riverview to these smaller and more modern facilities throughout BC.
Riverview Hospital worked with the health authorities to implement a well organized patient transfer and closure plan for the hospital. This was completed and services at Riverview Hospital were discontinued at the end of July 2012.
