"We are passionate about being part of our patients' recovery journey," said Sukhdeep Dhaliwal, manager, Forensic Security Operations at the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital (FPH), speaking to the dedication of his colleagues on almost-eve of Healthcare Security and Safety Week, which runs from October 13 to 19.

Many of the Forensic Services Officers at FPH have service histories, ranging in length from under a year to 30 years.

Officers participate in behavioural health related risk assessments for patients, and also provide input for patients' behavioural care plans, assist clinical teams in safely implementing behavioural care plans and support the safe integration of patient's into the community while at all times ensuring public safety.

Appointed Special Provincial Constables (Peace Officers) by Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General, Forensic Services Officers work side-by-side with clinical professionals at FPH. Forensic Services Officers receive specialized training at the Justice Institute of BC, and training in therapeutic and relational security.

"During a patient's time here, we get to know them as people who need support to recover from their mental illnesses, past traumas, and high-risk lifestyles before they can be reunited with their loved ones," said Dhaliwal. "Every patient leaves a recovery story behind, and it is gives us all a sense of gratification to have been part of that story."
