At the Burnaby Centre for Mental Health and Addiction (BCMHA), we have engaged family members in Partnerships in Care meetings as a part of our commitment to involve clients and families in their care. During these meetings, members voiced the need for a group that would connect family members supporting their loved ones. This feedback was heard, and a support group has been established at the centre.

The Family Support Group was launched on Monday, March 19th, 2018.  When asked what this first meeting was like, everyone had something positive to say. Lisa Kofod, a family member participating in the support group, reflected on the first meeting and the feeling of connection members experienced.

"Even though we were all meeting for the first time, every family member who was able to attend was so supportive and genuine, I quickly felt I was among people who needed no explanation for all that my family is enduring. Our shared experiences and deep caring for our loved ones has already begun to shape the direction of our new group. My hope is we are able to offer encouragement and invaluable information to one another, as well as to families who are at the beginning this difficult journey." – Lisa Kofod, family member

The Family Support Group will meet on the third Monday of every month at the Burnaby Centre (3405 Willingdon Avenue, Burnaby) from 6-8:00 p.m. If you have any questions, please contact: family@bcmhs.bc.ca
